How the Lower City Grew

Generations turned temporary work settlements into homes and communities.

As the upper city expanded, building, maintenance, transport and trade brought workers from elsewhere. They lived near canyon works outside protected upper-city residential areas, even when they were permitted to work above.

Families and newcomers made temporary shelters permanent. Over generations, homes, workshops, markets and local traditions spread down the available ledges and reinforced terraces. The Lower City became a society in its own right, not a single planned settlement.
